M215 desktop lab rules

1st term 2007-2008

Authorized users
  1. The Desktop Laboratory is for the exclusive use this term of M.A. Communication graduate students and undergrads enrolled this term in COMTECH, FOTSHOP and PRINPRO.
  2. Given the number of enrolled users the Department will apply these rules vigorously.
  3. Some THSCAM2 and THSOCM2 students whose theses projects involve desktop or Web publishing may also use the lab, subject to clearance from their mentors. THSCAMS/THSOCMS have no lab access.
  4. No other students are permitted inside the lab.
Authorized use
  1. The lab shall be used only for exercises and projects directly related to these classes and those desktop or Web theses. This rule applies also to Internet access.
  2. The lab is not to be used for any other purposes, including student clubs or organizations, thesis proposals (THSCAM1/THSOCM1), theses, term papers, assignments and the like.
  3. Use of printers is subject to instructor's direction.
Others
  1. Save files only in directories designated for your classes:
    d:\comtech\username
    d:\fotshop\username
    d:\prinpro\username
    Files in these directories will only be deleted at end-term. Files saved elsewhere will be erased periodically.

  2. Upon discretion of your instructor, a server (\\comm_fileserver) has been designated for depositing your projects and exercises.
  3. The Student Handbook regards accessing Chat, ICC, MUD sites and the like, as well as the use of mobile cellular phones in the lab as minor offenses (Section 13.3.2).

  4. Scan/clean floppy/flash disks.

  5. Keep the place clean. No eating, drinking, chewing gum.

  6. Report any equipment, software or virus problems immediately to the lab technician or your instructor.

  7. The Department reserves the right to take disciplinary action for unauthorized use of equipment.
